Seabed Sanctuary is an artists’ initiative working at the intersection of art and environmental science.  We are a not–for-profit collective of independent practitioners who care about biodiversity loss in our coastal waters; artists working with environmentalists, marine professionals, and concerned citizens.  Currently we are in the research and development stage of creating an underwater sculpture garden in Bantry Bay, Ireland.

The vision is for a submarine area at a depth of approximately 15m, that will stimulate awareness and enquiry into marine life.  The sculptures will be from ecologically sound materials, and any concrete used will be created with best practice for sustainability.  There will be nooks and crannies for habitats, thus forming base structures that nurture the growth of natural reefs, providing an environment for indigenous marine species to thrive.

A feature of the Wild Atlantic Way, the site will serve as an observation area to monitor changing populations of local ecosystems as we weather the challenges of climate change and other threats to the biodiversity of our waters.
